Are Glass Water Bottles and Carafes Healthier?

Glass is non-porous, so it doesn't absorb odours or stains and won't give water a plastic taste. Borosilicate glass - the type used in most of our carafes, bottles and kettles - is also heat-resistant, which means it handles hot and cold drinks far better than ordinary glass. Our Borosilicate Glass Jug with Gold Lid, for example, is rated from -20°C to 150°C. For everyday drinking water, a borosilicate bottle or carafe is one of the simplest switches you can make.

What Is a Carafe?

A carafe is a simple, usually lidless or lightly-lidded glass vessel for serving water, juice or wine at the table or bedside. Unlike a jug or pitcher, a carafe tends to be slimmer and more elegant, often with no handle. A bedside carafe - sometimes called a night set or tumble-up - comes with a glass that sits upside down on top, acting as both a lid and a cup.

Glass Water Bottles & Fridge Bottles

For the fridge and everyday hydration, the Borosilicate Glass Water Bottle holds 500 ml and seals with an airtight glass lid, in a minimalist gradient finish. It is microwaveable without the lid, dishwasher friendly and can be stored in the refrigerator - a lighter, cleaner-looking alternative to plastic fridge bottles.

For larger volumes, our slim fridge jugs do the same job for the whole family. The Pink Glass Water Jug holds 2500 ml in borosilicate glass with a gold stainless steel lid, and its slim body is designed to fit most refrigerator side doors. The Brown Glass Jug with Gold Lid has a V-shaped spout for drip-free pouring and is microwave and dishwasher safe without its lid. How to Care for Glass Carafes & Bottles

• Avoid thermal shock: don't pour boiling water into a cold carafe or put a hot one straight into the fridge; let glass come to room temperature first.
• Remove metal lids before microwaving - our glass jugs are microwave safe without the lid.
• Clean narrow necks with a bottle brush and warm soapy water; a little lemon and baking soda removes water marks.

• Don't freeze glass carafes full of water - expanding ice can crack glass.
