Luxury Tableware & Serveware for Every Occasion

A beautiful table starts with the pieces on it. At Whites & Pastels, our luxury tableware and serveware collection brings together embossed porcelain plates and bowls, gold stainless steel cutlery, glass and porcelain teapots, borosilicate carafes and serving pieces - all designed in one signature palette so that everything you buy works together, from a weekday dal-chawal to a festive dinner party.

Tableware, Crockery, Dinnerware & Serveware - What's the Difference?

These words overlap, and in India they're often used interchangeably. Crockery is the everyday term for plates, bowls, cups and serving dishes, especially ceramic and porcelain. Dinnerware means the plates and bowls each person eats from. Tableware is the broader word for everything on the table - dinnerware plus cutlery, glassware and table linen. Serveware is what food is served from: serving bowls, platters, teapots, carafes, trays and serving spoons. This collection brings all of them together in one palette of whites, pastels and gold.

Building Your Dinner Set Piece by Piece

Rather than buying one boxed dinner set, many people now build their table piece by piece - choosing the plates, bowls and serveware they will actually use. Because everything at Whites & Pastels shares one palette, it's easy to start small and add over time. A simple way to build:

Crockery Checklist for a New Home

Item For a Family of 4 For Hosting
Katoris / small bowls 8 (two per person) 12-16
Dessert bowls 4 8
Serving bowls 3 (one with lid) 5-6
Platters and snack plates 2 4
Cutlery A 24-piece set (6 place settings) Add a second set or dessert spoons
Serving spoons and ladles 4 6-8
Tea cups and saucers 4-6 8-12
Teapot and carafe 1 each 1 each + a jug
Trays 1 serving tray Add a butler tray or snack tray

These are starting points - adjust for how often you host. A new home is also the perfect moment to add finishing touches like napkin rings and a table runner.

Porcelain, Glass & Gold - Our Materials

Our tableware is made in three main materials, each chosen for how it looks and how it is used. Porcelain and ceramic bring elegance to plates, bowls and teapots - many pieces, like the Victorian Embossed Ceramic Teapot and the Standing Bear Serving Bowl, are microwave and dishwasher safe. Borosilicate glass is heat-resistant, used in our glass teapot sets and bedside carafes. Stainless steel with gold PVD finish gives our cutlery and katoris a lasting gold shine - the Gold Cutlery Set 24 Piece and the Mini Dip & Chutney Bowl are 304-grade stainless steel.

Care varies by piece, so always check the product page - for example, the White Porcelain Footed Bowl with Gold Stand is hand wash only.

Choosing a Palette: Whites, Pastels & Gold

A consistent palette is what makes a table look curated rather than collected. White is the foundation - food looks its best on it, and it never clashes. Pastels such as blush, sage, powder blue and ivory add softness without overwhelming the food, and work beautifully for brunches, baby showers and spring lunches. Gold is the accent: a gold rim, gold cutlery or a gold tray lifts white porcelain for festive evenings. A simple rule is roughly 70% white, 20% pastel and 10% gold - enough shine to feel special, never so much that it looks busy.

Serving an Indian Meal

Indian meals are served family-style, with many dishes at once, so serveware matters as much as the plates. Keep dal and gravies in lidded serving bowls so they stay warm, give each dish its own ladle or serving spoon, and serve rotis from a lined basket with a tong. Katoris beside each plate hold dal, sabzi, raita and dessert, while a platter in the centre holds rice or biryani. Finish with a carafe of water, a small bowl of pickle or chutney, and a dessert bowl for kheer or gulab jamun.

Material Look Good to Know Explore
Porcelain and ceramic Elegant, smooth, often embossed Many pieces are microwave and dishwasher safe; gold-rimmed pieces generally aren't microwave safe - check each product Serving Bowls
Borosilicate glass Clear, light, modern Heat-resistant; used in glass teapots and carafes Kettles & Carafes
Stainless steel with gold PVD Warm, festive, lasting shine Rust-resistant; avoid abrasive scrubbers to protect the finish Cutlery

Setting a Luxury Table - A Simple Guide

  • Start with the base: a table runner or tablecloth in white sets a calm canvas.
  • Layer plates: a dinner plate with a snack or dessert plate on top.
  • Add katoris: small bowls for dal, raita and dessert beside each plate.
  • Lay the cutlery: gold or silver, with napkin rings to finish each setting.
  • Serve in style: serving bowls with lids in the centre, a carafe of water and a teapot for after the meal.

Everyday Dining vs Festive Hosting

For everyday meals, choose sturdy pieces that go in the microwave and dishwasher, a set of katoris for dal and sabzi, and cutlery you're happy to use daily. For festive hosting - Diwali, weddings, pujas and anniversaries - layer in gold: footed bowls, gold snack trays, gold serving spoons, napkin rings and a tablecloth. Because the palette is shared, your everyday pieces sit comfortably alongside your festive ones.

Hosting Essentials by Occasion

  • High tea: teapot and tea cups, a tiered cake stand, sugar tongs and dessert plates.
  • Dinner party: serving bowls with lids, a dal ladle, a roti tong, napkin rings and a carafe on the table.
  • Cocktail evening: a butler tray table, glassware, an ice tong and a cheese board.
  • Festive open house: gold snack trays for dry fruits, a tiered stand for mithai and a vase of marigolds.
  • Sunday brunch: platters, a glass jug of juice, butter knives and a lace tablecloth.

Care for Luxury Tableware

  • Check each product page - care varies by piece.
  • Gold rims and gold details: generally not microwave safe; hand wash gently where advised.
  • Gold PVD steel: mild detergent, soft sponge, no abrasive scrubbers, pat dry.
  • Glass: avoid sudden temperature changes; let hot glass cool before washing.
  • Wood and leather: wipe clean and dry; don't soak.
